International Archives Week and International Archives Day

International Archives Week, 8th to 14th June 2020, was used to raise awareness of the role of archives and share glimpses from the Museum's own archives and the importance of the work associated with an archive. Archivists and records managers are indispensable to the preservation of the world's memory and that they work every day to Empower Knowledge Societies. The week-long series of posts sought to establish this.

Each day was provided with a theme, which was followed suit.

Monday, 8th June 2020: Opening Statement - While giving viewers a sneak peek into the archives, a very important concept of handling was discussed briefly, with the need to handle with care; use of gloves, and provision of the necessary support to the artefact!

Celebrating The Archives

Wednesday, 10th June 2020: Digital Preservation - Addressing the theme of Digital Preservation, The City Palace Museum, Udaipur spoke about its Digitization & Documentation of Wall Paintings, with special mention of Chitram Ki Burj. The extensive wall paintings form a rich record of the past; a video by Mr. Sanjay Dhar discussed the documentation process involved.

The Chitram Ki Burj is filled with murals, spanning across the 17th to 19th centuries; featuring courtly life, festivals, processions, boat rides and everyday life on the city's streets, thus making it a very valuable resource. In 2018, Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation commissioned a detailed documentation and condition assessment of these murals. The project was supported by The Friends of Heritage Preservation (FOHP), USA, and was worked on by New Delhi based Painting Conservation Consultant, Mr. Sanjay Dhar. In late 2019, an emergency, on-site treatment to stabilize the paint layer was carried out by Mr. Dhar and a team of conservators; the stage wise process of which has been systematically documented and digitized, as seen in the video.
