Exhibition - The Way of the Master The Great Artists of India, 1100-1900

Museum Reitberg, Zurich - 1 May - 21 August 2011
The City Palace Museum, Udaipur has loaned 12 works from its historic Pictorial Archives of the Maharanas of Mewar, Udaipur for this exhibition. These works are on display at the Museum Reitberg, Zurich, Switzerland until the 21st of August when the exhibits will move to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York from September 2011 to January 2012. The exhibition traces the development of the traditional Master to pupil training in families of master painters in India from the 12th to the 19th century. The Udaipur works on loan are of particular significance as they showcase the progression of artists using photography as a medium for the first time. Several photographs and paintings from the Pictorial Archives of the Maharanas of Mewar are illustrative of this development. Most of the works on loan are by Tara, father of sons Shivlal and Mohanlal. The younger son Mohanlal was the first official photographer at the court of Udaipur.
